What Is Unicode Strikethrough Text?

Strikethrough text is text with a horizontal line drawn through the middle of each character, traditionally used to indicate deleted or corrected content. In web design and word processors, strikethrough is applied using HTML tags or formatting buttons. But for plain-text environments — social media posts, Discord messages, SMS, and usernames — those methods do not work.

The solution is Unicode combining characters. By appending a Unicode combining strikethrough character (U+0336) after each letter, the line appears to run through the text regardless of the platform. This generator does that automatically, along with two additional effects: underline (U+0332) and double strikethrough (U+0337).

Three Text Decoration Styles

  • S̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶: The classic horizontal line through the center of each character. Used to show crossed-out text, corrections, ironic humor, or "this is wrong" annotations. The Unicode combining character U+0336 (COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY) is appended after each letter.
  • U̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲: Adds a line beneath each character using U+0332 (COMBINING LOW LINE). Works in all plain-text environments and produces a consistent underline effect that is not dependent on platform formatting.
  • D̷o̷u̷b̷l̷e̷ S̷t̷r̷i̷k̷e̷t̷h̷r̷o̷u̷g̷h̷: Uses U+0337 (COMBINING SHORT SOLIDUS OVERLAY), which produces a diagonal slash through each character — sometimes described as a double strikethrough or slash-through effect. It creates a more aggressive, emphatic look than the standard strikethrough.

Where to Use Strikethrough Text

  • Discord: Discord supports its own ~~strikethrough~~ markdown, but Unicode strikethrough works in places where markdown does not render — like usernames, server names, and channel names. It also works in bots and embeds.
  • Twitter and Instagram: Neither platform supports HTML or markdown formatting in posts, so Unicode strikethrough is the only way to add this effect to your tweets, captions, or bios.
  • Reddit: Reddit supports its own strikethrough formatting, but Unicode strikethrough can be used in plain-text contexts or for a subtler visual effect.
  • Usernames: Stand out on any platform with a strikethrough or underlined username.
  • Humor and irony: Classic internet use — write something and strike it out to suggest you "didn't mean it" or for comedic effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use Unicode strikethrough instead of Discord's ~~ syntax?

Discord's markdown strikethrough (~~text~~) only works in message content — not in usernames, server nicknames, channel names, or bot-generated text without markdown parsing. Unicode strikethrough, being composed of actual characters, works in all of these contexts and on any platform that renders Unicode.

Does strikethrough text work on all social media platforms?

It works on most modern platforms. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, WhatsApp, and Discord all render Unicode combining characters correctly. A small number of older or niche platforms may strip or fail to display combining characters.

Can I combine strikethrough with other effects?

Technically yes — you could process text through multiple generators — though the results can become hard to read when combining effects. For dramatically glitchy text, try the Cursed Text Generator instead, which uses combining diacritics for an intense visual effect. For other decoration styles, the Weird Text Generator offers fullwidth, small caps, upside down, and mirror transformations.

Is the strikethrough text copyable?

Yes. The output is plain Unicode text and copies to your clipboard just like any other text. The combining characters travel with the letters they are attached to, so the strikethrough effect is preserved when pasting.
