How to Use the Dwarven Name Generator

Choose a gender, enable or disable the clan name, then click Generate Name. Each result draws from authentic D&D and Tolkien-tradition dwarven naming conventions — short, hard-consonant names with a Norse or Germanic linguistic flavour, paired with strong clan surnames that speak to the Dwarf's deep cultural ties.

Dwarven Naming Traditions

In D&D and most fantasy traditions following Tolkien's lead, Dwarven names share several distinctive characteristics:

  • Hard consonants: K, G, D, B, and R sounds dominate. Soft vowel-heavy names are unusual for Dwarves.
  • Short given names: Most Dwarven given names are one to two syllables — Thorin, Dain, Kildrak, Tordek.
  • Clan pride: Dwarves often introduce themselves by clan before personal name, reflecting the importance of lineage and ancestor-worship in Dwarven culture.
  • Secret names: In some traditions, every Dwarf has a secret true name in the Dwarven language (Dwarvish) that they share with no one outside the family.

Famous Dwarves in Fantasy

  • Thorin Oakenshield (Tolkien) — King under the Mountain, leader of the Company of Dwarves
  • Gimli, son of Glóin (Tolkien) — Member of the Fellowship of the Ring
  • Bruenor Battlehammer (Forgotten Realms) — King of Mithral Hall, foster father of Drizzt Do'Urden
  • Balin (Tolkien) — Eldest companion of Thorin, who later led the doomed expedition to Moria

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dwarven female names different from male names?

In D&D 5e lore, female Dwarven names tend to be slightly softer but share the same hard-consonant linguistic style. Non-dwarves often can't tell the difference without being told. Both genders use the same clan names.

What class is most fitting for a Dwarf character?

Dwarves' Constitution bonuses and Stonecunning make them excellent Fighters, Paladins, and Clerics. Mountain Dwarves get an extra +2 to Strength, making them exceptional Fighters. Hill Dwarves' Wisdom bonus and extra Hit Points suit Clerics and Monks particularly well.
